Syrians Protest Rebels

According to local reports a Syrian mob of numbering in the hundreds have descended upon the streets of Syria’s second city Aleppo, in protest against the blockade on the City, imposed by Western-backed rebel fighters.

The blockade is intended to besiege the government held areas of the City, but since the majority of Aleppo is government held (particularly in its western districts), the blockade is having the affect of impairing the ability of the City’s civilian population to function.

Rebels claim that the blockade is necessary in order weaken President Assad’s lines of supply, but many locals disagree, claiming that the blockade has led to severe shortages in basic food stuffs and essential medical supplies.

The UN’s World Health Organization or ‘WHO’, has insisted that rebel fighters must escort food and medical convoys into Aleppo in order to comply with international laws and regulations governing the terms of warfare, but the rebels forces have insisted that the blockade shall remain in place as it currently is.

Yesterday one anti-rebel demonstrator was shot dead on the streets of Aleppo by an alleged rebel sniper and footage posted to YouTube has shown at least scores of civilians protesting the continuing siege, whereupon several men dressed in black arrive in cars, only to open fire upon the massed demonstrators.

According to translators, the demonstrators were chanting “the people want an end to the blockade”.

The UN’s World Food Programme has confirmed that it is attempting to deliver food rations to at least 250,000 people ahead of Ramadan, but locals claim that basic food items such as flour and bread are now almost completely unavailable at affordable prices.

Meanwhile in Syria’s capital of Damascas, President Assad’s government has called upon the UN to urgently step-up humanitarian assistance to both Aleppo and the Syrian City of Homs, where rebel forces are continuing to devastate built-up areas with fighting, as the last rebel pockets are liquidated by government troops loyal to President Assad, backed by Hezbollah guerrillas from Lebanon.

One protestor told reporters that the blockade has reduced the standard of life in Aleppo to “medieval conditions”, with no electricity, running water or working sewage treatment.

Meanwhile as government forces close in on rebel positions in the Syrian town of Khalidiya, the rebel fighters there are becoming increasingly desperate, frequently uploading videos of themselves to the internet in which they can be seen making threats to blow themselves up, whilst dressed in suicide bomb vests.

The UN claims that more than 90,000 people have been killed in the Syrian fighting so far, with at least 1.7 million Syrians having been displaced into the Syrian diaspora.
