Aerosmith front man Steve Tyler admitted during an interview with Australia’s 60 Minutes that he spent five or six million dollars on cocaine during their heyday in the 1970s and ’80s.
When asked directly about the $20 million estimate written on his 2011 memoir “Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?”, Tyler answered: “No, probably, realistically, 5 or 6, easy. But it doesn’t really matter in my opinion. You also could say I snorted half of Peru, but, you know, it’s what we did.”
Tyler, whose drug dependency is an open book to the public, said in an interview with TODAY’s Matt Lauer that drug addiction only leads to three things: death, jail and insanity. He even admitted that his drug use has affected his band and family life; it took away his marriages and kids that there was even a time his kids told him they don’t know him anymore. However, he also said that cocaine is not the only reason why issues arose within the band. He confessed that he suffered from LSD or Lead Singer Disorder where in he felt that since he represents the band, the other band members should listen to him.
After realizing that he had lost everything to his addiction he decided to sober up in mid-80s. But in 2006 he had a relapse and got hooked up on prescription medication while being treated for hepatitis C which led him back to his bad habits. What’s good though is that after Thanksgiving revelry on cocaine and pills in December of 2009 he decided to seek help and checked himself into the Betty Ford Clinic.
After a year and a few months of rehabilitation he found something new to spend his time on; he decided to be a judge on “American Idol,” serving on the Fox series for seasons 10 and 11.
