A “sophisticated” tunnel presumably intended as a hidden and secret route for illegal activities such as smuggling prohibited drugs and migrants across the U.S.-Mexican border have been discovered, Mexican authorities reported.
Considered as the most ingenious of such structures found in recent years, the tunnel which is about 10 meters deep and 30 meters long has a ventilation system and lighting, and its discovery was due to an anonymous tip assumed to be from a concerned citizen, Mexicali police chief Mario Antonio Carillo told AFP on Jan. 5th, Saturday.
The entrance of the still under construction tunnel is located in a warehouse approximately 300 meters (328 yards) from the border between the Mexican city of Mexicali and Calexico, California, Carillo added.
Underground passageways along the U.S.-Mexican border are not uncommon, and authorities say they were constructed and used by organized crime groups to facilitate their illicit activities of drug and human trafficking, mostly used as drug mules, into the United States and discoveries of such passageways in Mexico is not something novel.
In relation to drug- induced violence, Police chief Carillo also stated that just in the past 24 hours only, at least 26 people were killed in Mexico in apparent drug-related crimes, including those of the six men who were shot dead and whose bodies bears evidences of torture.
According to the New Mexican government that took over power and governance in December 2012, when troops were deployed by the previous administration to battle drug cartels, at least 70,000 people died in the process since 2006.
A man was arrested at the scene during the time the tunnel was uncovered, and he is being investigated by the authorities.
