So the football season is well and truly over. What to do? Well there’s plenty being written about various transfers and managerial appointments around the world and the headlines so far are Mourinho to Chelsea, Falcao to Monaco and Neymar to Barcelona. In honesty it’s going to be difficult to top such massive news stories in football and regardless, reading the day’s latest football rumours and transfers doesn’t take up the hours in the way that in-season competitive matches do. The only matches going on at the moment are the Under 21 Euros and then there’s the Confederations Cup, but in honesty, maybe its time to do something else – two months of non-football activities. Impossible? Well there’s more to life than just football…right? So what to do with the rest of this released time?
Well there’s other sports of course. There’s the Ashes series between England and Australia following the Champions Trophy in cricket and there’s the ongoing Fomula 1 season while there’s the British Lions tour of Australia. That’s some pretty top-notch sport, but maybe you’re a bit sported out. You could go and play sport instead – get a ball or frisby and go to a park, hours of endless fun! But still, there’s more to life than sport…right?
Well there’s plenty of music festivals of course – and it’s been a really good year for music with loads of excellent new albums (Atoms For Peace, The Knife, James Blake, Daft Punk of course and many others). There’s some pretty good festival line-ups too at Glastonbury, Bestival, Latitude, the Carling festivals and there’s loads of good smaller ones too – I went to Camden Rocks last weekend and it was an enjoyable day of live music and beer as you could imagine! Or you could go out and play some music – get a guitar and sing your heart out – I’m doing that at The Monarch in a couple of week’s by the way (shameless self-plug).
You can also go on a holiday somewhere exotic and do all of these things there while also looking at some famous sites. You could go for a walk, go for a run or just sit down outside. I think being outside is key to all of this really though this might just be because i’m writing this outside on Russell Square at the moment. Or maybe you can’t be outside because you’ve got exams and therefore hours and hours of revision ahead. I had that last year…I don’t envy you…but you can of course do your work outside – like I’m doing.
But maybe, like me, you always find your mind longing for that most satiable of entertainments. Even as I write about all of these wondrous things, I can’t resist clicking on BBC Sport or The Football Magazine to find out if Arsenal will be signing Higuain this summer or perhaps Jovetic. I can’t help but long to read some expert analysis about the season gone and to come or pieces analysing the state of the English game, financial fair play or various other football-related stories.
There’s more to life right?
