As the civil war in Syria continues Syrian government forces yesterday recaptured and secured the entire city centre of Qusair, Syria’s border town with northeast Lebanon, with reports of the fighting spilling over into Lebanon itself.

Syrian government media has described the fighting as a “major operation” to recapture rebel positions, with outlying road junctions, villages and hamlets already captured prior to the main assault. The town of some 30,000 residents which lies approximately 30km from Homs; the site of the Syrian government’s most recent victory against rebel forces, has high strategic and geographical value since it is a satellite of Homs and operates as a gateway to Syria via the highway 413 from the town of Qaa, in north-eastern Lebanon.
Sources believe that the area had been used as a hub for the injection of foreign fighters into Syria from Lebanon. In Lebanon itself the country is divided between support for the leader of Syria’s established government President Bashar Al Assad and the largely Islamist militants, attempting to overthrow the government with the aid of Western and Israeli logistical, financial and other backing.
In Lebanon’s second city of Tripoli for example, five people were wounded in clashes between the two factions only yesterday. Many believe that with the highway cleared Al Assad’s Alawite minority government will now enjoy broader access to material and human support from Mediterranean coastal enclaves in Lebanon, which share common ethnic and religious affinities to Syria’s enduring regime.
Having just raised the Syrian flag over the central municipal building in Qusair a Syrian government spokesman declared: “Our valiant toops have restored security and stability to the Qusair municipality building and surrounding structures and are continuing to hunt down terrorists”
The victory comes as yet another grave military set back to the rebel forces which have suffered a string of disasterous defeats in recent weeks, despite substantial support and training from Western powers, including at least one Israeli air raid which recently devastated the Syrian government’s capacity to effectuate total air superiority.
