Deep in the Amazon men do not seem to suffer from prostate cancer for long. At least their symptoms soon evaporate as if they were not ill at all.
The worst symptoms of prostate cancer are surely those associated with constantly needing a pee. Sufferers seem to spend more time in the bathroom than they would ever want. The illness is debilitating and, at times, embarrassing.
So why do these locals not suffer? What are they doing that men elsewhere are not?
The answer is what has come to be known as Prosventate. Prosventate is a blend of local plants which are left in the sun and oxidised then ground into a dirty brown powder. The powder is added to water and either brewed as a tea or left overnight in cold water then drunk by the litre the next morning. Every day the men drink this bitter, powdery mix until their symptoms go away. Mothers and wives make sure the menfolk drink this mix even when they do not have prostate cancer. The mix is supposed to make men live long and strong.
In recent years the tea process has been industrialized and a small factory has been created, which adds high levels of hygiene to the whole process. Bags of tea sit in refrigerated rooms waiting to be despatched all round the world. The mix is organic and does not contain any banned substances, so the tea can be imported into most countries without much ado.
Angel Rosales, the factory manager, is expecting the powder to be converted into pills in the near future. The powder is already undergoing drug trials around the world, sponsored by a massive drugs company.
“Our expectations for the drug and for the local area are very, very positive,” Angel smiles. “Our problem right now is creating enough of the tea to meet the huge international demand for our product.”
